I am presently the DHL (department head local) for hospitalist service in an FHA hospital. I totally agree with all the sentiments expressed in Dr Verchere’s editorial [“Who wants to be a department head? BCMJ 2013;55:134 [9]]. What a great insight! These jobs are difficult, thankless, poorly paid, and underappreciated by colleagues and health authorities. However, they are essential and need to be done by smart stakeholders—however busy our main job is. Otherwise, by default unqualified people get slotted into the system. Then the problem gets compounded.
Thank you Dr Verchere.
