Call for nominations: 2013 BCMA and CMA special awards

BCMA Silver Medal of Service
BCMA members are encouraged to nominate physicians or laypersons for the BCMA Silver Medal of Service award. The medal will be presented at the BCMA’s Annual General Meeting in June 2013. 

Physician nominees must have 25 years of membership in good standing in the BCMA, the CMA, and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia. Nonmedical candidates may be laypersons of Canadian or foreign citizenship. To be eligible for the award, nominees must meet at least one of the following criteria:

•    Long and distinguished service to the BCMA.
•    Outstanding contributions to medicine or medical/political involvement in British Columbia or Canada.
•    Outstanding contributions by a layperson to medicine or to the welfare of the people of British Columbia or Canada.

Nominations for the BCMA Silver Medal of Service may be made by any BCMA member in good standing. Submit the candidate’s curriculum vitae and your reasons for nominating the individual to the BCMA awards committee coordinator at 115–1665 West Broadway, Vancouver BC, V6J 5A4 by 30 November 2012.

CMA Honorary Membership
The BCMA is able to submit nominations to the CMA for individuals to receive the honor of becoming a CMA Honorary Member (previously called the CMA Senior Member Award). 

Candidates must be age 65 or over and must have maintained membership in both the BCMA and the CMA for the immediately preceding 10 consecutive years, including the forthcoming year (2013). They must have distinguished themselves in their medical careers by making a significant contribution to the community and to the medical profession. 

To nominate a candidate for the CMA Honorary Member Award, send a letter outlining the reasons for your nomination along with the individual’s curriculum vitae to the BCMA awards committee coordinator at 115–1665 West Broadway, Vancouver BC, V6J 5A4 by 30 November 2012.

Dr David M. Bachop Gold Medal for Distinguished Medical Service
This award may be made annually to a British Columbia doctor who is judged by the selection committee to have made an extraordinary contribution in the field of organized medicine or community service. 

Achievement should be so outstanding as to serve as an inspiration and a challenge to the medical profession in British Columbia. Only one award will be made per year and there is no obligation on the fund to make the award annually. 

A letter of nomination including the candidate’s current curriculum vitae should be sent to the BCMA awards committee coordinator at 115–1665 West Broadway, Vancouver BC, V6J 5A4 by 30 November 2012.

Dr Don Rix Award for Physician Leadership (D.B. Rix Award)
BCMA members can nominate a BCMA member in good standing for the D.B. Rix Award. This award recognizes lifetime achievement so outstanding as to serve as an inspiration and a challenge to the medical profession in British Columbia. Nominees may have achieved distinction in one or more of the following ways:

•    Supported lifelong learning opportunities.
•    Promoted excellence in medical education.
•    Built consensus among physicians and groups of physicians.
•    Provided leadership for new initiatives both in business and clinical practice.
•    Provided leadership and service to the general community or province either by direct support or through philanthropy.
•    Provided service to the medical profession through participation in the BCMA.
•    Provided leadership to the broader medical community.
•    Participated in legislative and other political activities in support of health care.

The award consists of a $2000 donation to a BC charity of the winner’s choice, as well as a gold medal.

Send a completed nomination form, a detailed letter of nomination, two letters of support, and the nominee’s curriculum vitae to the BCMA awards committee coordinator at 115–1665 West Broadway, Vancouver BC, V6J 5A4 by 30 November 2012. Nominations submitted electronically will be considered as long as the origin of the documentation can be verified. Handwritten submissions will not be accepted.

About the ICMJE and citation styles

The ICMJE is small group of editors of general medical journals who first met informally in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1978 to establish guidelines for the format of manuscripts submitted to their journals. The group became known as the Vancouver Group. Its requirements for manuscripts, including formats for bibliographic references developed by the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM), were first published in 1979. The Vancouver Group expanded and evolved into the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), which meets annually. The ICMJE created the Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing, and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals to help authors and editors create and distribute accurate, clear, easily accessible reports of biomedical studies.

An alternate version of ICMJE style is to additionally list the month an issue number, but since most journals use continuous pagination, the shorter form provides sufficient information to locate the reference. The NLM now lists all authors.

BCMJ standard citation style is a slight modification of the ICMJE/NLM style, as follows:

  • Only the first three authors are listed, followed by "et al."
  • There is no period after the journal name.
  • Page numbers are not abbreviated.
