Welcome to the new BCMJ.org!
Blog Author: David R. Richardson, MD
The completion of our new site marks the launch of the BC Medical Journal as a true online publication, and a place where physicians, health care workers, and the public can come to engage in conversations on BCMJ articles and access the latest health headlines.
The goal of the BCMJ web site is to enrich physicians’ work life by providing timely, relevant, and practical medical information and a forum for discussion of subjects that matter to BC physicians.
Knowing that the print Journal has a loyal audience of BC physicians and great content, in early 2010 we set out to reinvent the BCMJ, incorporating social media elements and making use of current web technology and practices.
While maintaining our traditional focus on the practice of medicine in BC—articles written principally by and for BC physicians—we’ve added video, the ability to comment on articles, a frequently updated selection of health headlines, and patient handouts to accompany clinical articles as a resource for our physician readership and their patients.
The new BCMJ.org features many ways for readers to engage with the BCMJ. Story commenting allows readers to provide immediate feedback on articles, and promotes conversations between physicians, their colleagues, and their patients. The new “People” section features current physician-related content such as Good Guys, Proust for Physicians, In Memoriam, and presidential interviews. The section will also feature author profiles and video interviews so that BC physicians can learn more about their colleagues, get information about how articles are written, and read BCMJ author biographies. Video content linked to clinical articles, such as related surgical videos and author interviews, will complement our print content. Finally, BCMJ.org Health Notes will provide physicians with reliable information that they can pass along to their patients.
Social media elements have been built into the new site to engage new audiences, and to provide new channels for content delivery. Our followers receive article headlines from the BCMJ site, as well as other relevant BC-focussed medical headlines of interest to the medical community.
The BC Medical Journal looks forward to building BCMJ.org into an enriching source of information and discussion among BC physicians. We welcome your comments and feedback, both on articles and on the site itself. Please give us your feedback using the commenting fields, or by e-mailing journal@bcma.bc.ca, and we invite you to use the Twitter and Facebook icons to follow our social media feeds.
