I have been a facilitator for PBL sessions in the US med school, while holding ass prof position. I can only say that the role of facilitator should not be minimal and it is more that just being an observer.
With proper guidance which topics to address, which accents to stress - it was a good learning process for my students and great teaching experience for myself.
